We felt like skipping elf school and going black friday shopping instead. Look, we bought a notebook so we won't have to borrow yours every night!
Back story: Friday morning, I was minding my own business at work, when Colin texted me:
"May I skip (insert school subject) and instead go black Friday shopping with (insert friend). Would you also support me financially, or do I have to pay for all the clothes myself?"
I was amused and touched at the same time. Colin's school doesn't believe in communicating with parents. We are never informed when a lesson is canceled, and that doesn't happen so rarely. The students are subject to an absence system that grants them a number of “absence hours” per semester. They are allowed to use these independently, but must ensure that any sick days can be covered. There is therefore a clear emphasis on personal responsibility.
So I couldn't help but think he's one heck of a smart guy. Asking for my permission to do something he knows he can do without my knowing, only to follow up with a request for money ;-)
It is always a special pleasure when our elves are allowed to leave the house. Here they accompanied us to Colin's ice hockey game.
December 1st, traditionally the day the Advent Calendar starts. I didn't just want to leave it in plain sight, so I hid it and left clues:
