When “Itchy Feet” maps out the soul of *Every European City", it does so with a spotlight on ethnic cuisine, local bars, cozy cafés, and unforgettable dining experiences. Nestled in the heart of Kreis 3, Idaplatz in Zurich, Switzerland, delivers all that - and more. This charming neighborhood square offers a refreshingly local alternative to the city's busier districts, seamlessly blending culinary diversity, relaxed street café culture, and bursts of seasonal beauty.
A Culinary Journey Around the World
Idaplatz is a miniature globe of flavors, where international cuisines come together in a few short blocks. Whether you’re on the hunt for your comfort food or looking to try something new, this corner of Zurich has something to please every palate.
- Le Calvados Sports Bar pairs lively sports screenings with casual bites, drawing an eclectic mix of locals and visitors alike.
- Kafi Dehei (literally "Café at home") lives up to its name with cozy interiors, homemade cakes, and all-day breakfast options that feel lovingly homemade.
- Ooki Izakaya brings a slice of Japan to Zurich, serving authentic small plates and sake in a warm, wood-accented space.
- Café Bebek is a feast for all the senses, with oriental flavors, vibrant interiors, and a youthful, buzzy vibe.
- Lou’s Comfort Food delivers American classics with generous portions and bold flavors.
- Delhi House of Best Curry lives up to its name, dishing out fragrant Indian curries that keep regulars coming back.
- And for a taste of Italy, Il Basilico hits the mark with its hearty pasta, crisp pizzas, and laid-back atmosphere.
A Street Café Culture Worth Savoring
In the warmer months, Idaplatz spills into the streets. Café tables dot the sidewalks, Aperol Spritzes glint in the sun, and conversation hums in multiple languages. Zurich’s café culture shines here, not in grand gestures, but in the gentle rhythm of everyday life. Morning espressos ease into afternoon meet-ups, and by nightfall, many cafés transition into lively neighborhood bars. It’s all very Zurich, but with a distinctly down-to-earth charm..
Cherry Blossoms in the Heart of the City
Come spring, Idaplatz becomes one of Zurich’s best-kept secrets. The cherry blossom trees lining Berta- and Zentralstrasse burst into delicate pink and white, turning the area into a floral dreamscape. Residents and visitors alike stroll beneath the petals, capturing photos, pausing on benches, or simply soaking in the fleeting beauty. It's a moment of stillness in the urban rush—a reminder to look up and appreciate the season.
A Local Haven with a Global Soul
What truly sets Idaplatz apart isn’t just the food or the flowers, it’s the people. This is a community of creatives, families, students, and socially-conscious residents who care about sustainability, diversity, and connection. With its bohemian spirit and eco-friendly mindset, Idaplatz is as much about values as it is about aesthetics. There’s a lived-in quality here, a sense of belonging that’s hard to find in trendier parts of the city.
Idaplatz may not make every guidebook’s top 10 list - but maybe that’s exactly why it feels so special. It’s where the global meets the local, where cherry blossoms bloom beside vegan brunches and family-run trattorias. It’s the kind of place you stumble upon, then quietly hope stays just as it is.
Have you ever discovered a hidden gem in your own city, one that felt like it was just waiting for you to notice it?
Disclaimer:
While this post may read like a well-fed insider’s guide, I must confess: I didn’t personally taste-test every restaurant mentioned. My research was fueled by strong coffee, online menus, and wistful window-staring! so if you discover a new favorite (or a surprisingly spicy surprise), I’ll take the credit… and none of the blame.
I would love to try the cozy restaurant, the comfort food restaurant and the Italian one. It all sounds very charming, and the pictures are lovely. How neat that you can feel a sense of belonging!
ReplyDeleteIdaplatz sounds like the perfect place to explore.I could almost taste the food.Very interesting the itchy feet map idea.
ReplyDeleteHey friend, I've been so indulged in work (man it cuts into my hobbies) but I wanted to pop over and say hi. I love all the pictures and my mouth go watering because I'm hungry and just ready to start my second cup of java. Cherry blossoms there are like the pear blossoms here and we just had a big bloom of azaleas .... I love this time of year but my nose can't stop sneezing. I cheated on today's post so I would have time to visit others.
ReplyDeleteCheers,

One thing I have loved about traveling in Europe is all the outdoor eateries. Even in the colder weather people will enjoy a meal sitting outside under a heater. I would love just strolling through Idaplatz!
ReplyDeleteI love having breakfast or lunch on the patio. Especially when you’re surrounded by all those pink flowered trees. Very cozy.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, perfect photos!!

What a delightful tour of the city, Tamara. I wonder how many eateries Zurich has in comparison to Saskatoon. We have plenty. My favourites are Asian cuisine, of course. No cherry blossoms here.
ReplyDeleteWhile Idaplatz sounds lovely at any time, I'd absolutely choose to come when I could see the cherry blossoms.
ReplyDeleteAnother fine tour Tamara! I like the street cafe and the cherry blossoms look great.
