Happy Holidays

Last instalment of A'lil Hoohaa's Photo Blogging Challenge of this year. The December episode is simply called Happy Holidays, so I definitely won't run out of pictures!

Unfortunately for most people December is a stressful month. Not only do the Holidays come with a lot of preparation, you may want to participate in social events, plus the end of the year is coming, meaning businesses may need to catch up on sales - or are on the receiving end and need to deliver goods or services.

The latter is true for us, plus my coworker is still recovering from her surgery, so I had a hard time carving out time for the fun things. Like attending a hockey game with a very special intermission "program": Santa driving the Zamboni!

Meeting the Harley Santas prior to their parade across the city of Basel. Their destination was a plaza where they distributed treats and raised money for a charitable organization. I didn't want to brace the crowds and went to a Christmas market that took place in a narrow alley instead. I had heard about the "Advänts Gass" but had no idea I was literally walking towards it on my way back to the car.

The charity happened to be the Theodora Foundation, a group of artists / clowns who call themselves Dr Chic, Dr Flash or Dr Stracciatella, and they visit 100,000 kids every year.

All across Switzerland, there's 75 of them, and just like the other staff members, the fun doctors (who actually come with some medical training) wear a badge, and their job title is "Humor Resources Manager", haha good one.

They talk to the kids, made them laugh and forget about their pain for a moment. Quite frankly, it works on parents, too! A few weeks ago we had a first-hand experience upon one of our ER visits.

Making cookies with my teenage son who did a nice job. The cookies are called Mailänderli, and they're probably the most popular Christmas cookies in Switzerland. Recipe and instructions here.

We had a little snow mid-December, much cherished! Of course temps went up and ruined a White Christmas for us. On the other hand, it's rather not suffer from cold spells like they're occurring in some parts of the world.

December wouldn't be complete without daily visits from our elves Cookie and Biscuit. I posted about their adventures, here's  the day where they played their version of Candy Crush.

Bonus picture of our living room. Since I didn't have time to decorate and wrap gifts, our elves took over, and that's what we woke up to on December 24!

Thank you for being part of my year! Hope you had a wonderful Holiday season! Here's to a happy 2023!

Now please head over to A'lil Hoohaa and check out my fellow bloggers' contributions!

  2. A lovely Christmas season! I enjoyed seeing Cookie and Biscuit's antics on FB. Anything and anyone who can distract a child/parent from their pain is a hero in my book.....the fact that they look like Santa is a bonus! As you know, our Christmas temps were not conducive to being outside for more than five minutes. But, this week, the temps are back in the 50s and 60sF! I wish you and yours a wonderful 2023! 💜

  4. Great set of photos for the theme! Funny about Zamboni. When I was in college, I worked for a local newspaper and had the chance to do a story on a guy who drove the Zamboni at a local rink. I ended up getting the chance to drive the Zamboni, which was totally cool. I didn't get to lay ice, though, but I did get to take it for a spin around the rink.

  5. Excellent stories and photos. The Humor Doctors are such a great idea for pediatric hospitals. Pediatric hospitals across Canada were overrun with flu, RSV and other cases for the past couple of months. A little laughter - or even a smile - would alleviate the stress for so many. Glad Colin turned out to have a pulled muscle and hope it's a healed up by now. The cookie recipe looks tasty, but my baking adventures these days are figuring out gluten-free baking, as our youngest has had all kinds of digestive issues for several months now and the doctor has advised trying a GF/low FODMAP diet for several months to see if things settle down. Hoping your co-worker recovers from surgery soon, so you have a little more margin in your 2023. Best wishes!
