Welcome back to the Ultimate Blog Challenge. I have not received today's official writing prompt, so I went ahead with something that has been on my mind:
What is your Organizing Style?
The other day, I came across Cassandra Aarssen, an Organizing Specialist, who divides people into four types of styles. She makes video about (clients') projects, and she will refer to them as typical bees or butterfly.
Whaaaat?
I googled it, and there you go, there's an online quiz you can take.
Because I had been paying attention to her videos, I already knew I was a ladybug, but just for the fun of it, I took the quiz, and boom: Ladybug!
What does it mean though?
First of all, there seem to be two general types when it comes to organizing: the visual and the hidden organizers. Visual ones like to have their everyday items out where they can see them. Hidden ones prefer to store their items behind closed doors.
Then there's an additional distinction: detail-oriented and simple.
Detailed organizers like to split up their stuff into many categories and have containers for every group of items, whereas simple organizers don't mind to throw generally similar things into the same box.

Makes sense so far?
Now there are combinations of the two: you may be a hidden organizer who likes to keep everything in drawers, cabinets and cupboards, but are you also into details (cricket), or are you OK with general categories (ladybug)?
Same goes for visual organizers. Some need all the cute little baskets, boxes and containers out where they can see them (bee), others are comfortable with generally organized categories, as long as they're out there where they can be seen (butterfly)
Depending on your type, you may find it very hard to let go of stuff.
- I may use this one day. I'm keeping it - just in case.
- But I paid good money for this.
- It may not be in perfect condition, but I can fix it.
- It was a gift.
Of course there are answers to your dilemma:
- Somebody may actually use it today! Donate it.
- If you're not wearing or using it, what good it is to hang onto the items? If it is worth a lot of money, someone may actually love to purchase it from you. Sell it.
- How long has it been hanging around here? Can you make time to fix it in the near future? Toss it.
- Obviously it feels like the noble thing to keep it, yet it's taking away space, and you don't like it. Regift or toss it.
Talk is cheap though. I still have a long way to go.
If you're interested to find out if you're a bee or a cricket, here's the link to the quiz.
Let me know what type you are!
My organizing style is "simple and fast"
ReplyDeleteThe quiz says I am a butterfly. I do like to see my stuff because I will forget where it is or just forget that it exists. I have a lot of stuff to go through now, but I haven't made time to get to it. I cleaned out my closet in December. I got rid of clothes that I hadn't worn in 25 years! It kind of hurt though 😀😀
ReplyDeleteMy oirganizing is usually done campaign style. I let things drift until I can't stand it any longer, and then I get things where I want them- at least for a while.
ReplyDeleteButterfly here! ☺ And sadly, hubby and I are both pack rats who hate to get rid of anything "just in case". Our basement storage area is a disaster! We need to do a purge, but you have to be in the mood for that.
ReplyDeleteI'm a Bee and says a bit of a perfectionist! I'm doing betting at removing clutter and donating lots of items that still have plenty of use.
ReplyDeleteQuiz? Did it! I'm a ladybug. Now I am off to read the rest of what it said about me. :)
