Elf on the Shelf, Season 2025 - Episode 4

Last week our elves joined us on a hockey road trip. They tried their hand at operating a hair straightener, had Colin solve the 3D candy cane puzzle, and waited for the Tunnelbana — a Christmassy version of Stockholm’s regular underground.

The week kicked off with a cup of coffee at Elfbucks.

The next day, they hung a retro suitcase ornament on the tree and challenged Colin with a few travel quiz questions. Why don’t you try to guess too?

  • Name the most photographed landmark in each city: New York City, London, and Paris
  • Guess the number of traditional taxis per 1,000 inhabitants in each city
  • Bodies recovered annually: assign these numbers to the correct city river — 4, 30, 60
  • A manually operated signal with red and green gas lamps was installed in 1868 to manage horse-drawn carriages. It was removed after a gas leak explosion; automatic electric lights came later.” Which city does this describe?
  • Rank the cities by total number of underground/metro stations: 472, 303, 272

Colin and his U21 teammates exchanged Secret Santa gifts. About two-thirds of the guys gave a roll of tape, used to optimize grip and improve puck control. Very useful, but not particularly original. Colin received glasses wipes from his Secret Santa, designed to prevent fogging under his helmet, thoughtful and practical. He also received candy, which our elves naturally got their hands on the next day.

More Secret Santa followed, this time in our family. We tried “Schrottwichteln”, loosely translated as exchanging crappy gifts with a twist. You didn’t just get a useless item nicely wrapped; you had to roll the dice to win your gifts. First time trying it, and we had a lot of fun.

Also, the items weren’t actually useless after all: some snacks, a gift voucher for a hairdresser’s visit, Hitster (a music quiz game)  Christmas Edition, and a book I gave my husband three years ago… still in its original cellophane wrapping ;-)

I didn’t do much prep work for this year’s Elf on the Shelf season, but somehow we made it to Christmas Eve. Even though I keep saying this might be the last time for a while, we’re still going strong. Colin turns 18 next year, so this could be the final real one. Weigh in — what do you think?
