Ultimate Blog Challenge - Accomplishing a Goal

Welcome back to Day 31/31 of the Ultimate Blog Challenge!

We made it, and therefore our last prompt is

Accomplishing a Goal

While I'm a determined and result oriented person, I usually struggle at setting goals. At least in a business setting. I think what made it hard in the jobs I usually had, was the fact that my personal contribution to achieveing these goals was pretty limited. Here's an example:

In the past bosses and / or shareholders typically wanted me to keep both labor costs and turnover low. However, they are  conflicting goals. If one of the main factors for employees to quit was "I don't get paid enough", then how on earth should lowering wages help to retain people??? Plus restaffing generates even more costs.

If I suggested that certain managers should not be allowed to hire because they were consistently doing a poor job, my counterparts from Operations were like "are you kidding, these managers have the highest sales?" They may very well, because that's what they care about. Have you looked at quality metrics though?

So I don't miss the corporate shareholder value vibes, that's for sure.

Now about my writing...

When I was a new Mom and *thought* I was gonna have a lot of time when the baby was asleep, I had some ideas about a book I wanted to write. I think I even wrote a few pages, sort of a plot and an introduction.

I never even finished the first chapter.

My baby did not sleep. Not ever. Except on stroller walks that lasted 90 minutes and longer. By that time I needed to pee and had to run home.

He was a mighty cute non-sleeper, I've got to give him that.

Since he didn't really sleep for long stretches through the night at any time, I didn't sleep either, and I was exhausted during the day. My brain was foggy to say the least. Have you ever seen the picture of this car on the freeway with the nozzle from the gas station still in the tank?

It was me. You may read about it here.

I did not have it in me.

Then I went back to work. The only writing I did from then on was employment agreements, recommendation letters and work memos.

The rest is history, except in June 2012 I started my blog. Posts are just about long and demanding enough for my attention span and stamina ;-)

So if "writing a book" was ever a serious goal, I failed.

If "having fun writing" was the goal, I'm doing well.

And I did have fun writing for this Ultimate Blog Challenge! Thank you for visiting and supporting me!

Let's keep in touch:
