Yay, it's Elf on the Shelf season again!
What am I talking about?
It all stems from a children’s book called “The Elf on the Shelf,” published in 2005 by Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell.
The story is about elves visiting children every day between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. They’re sent from Father Christmas to check if the kids are being naughty or nice, and to report back their findings to the boss.
It’s essentially like a very friendly game of hide and seek. Every morning the elf is somewhere new in the house for the kids to find.
The ‘shelf’ part of this tradition’s name is pretty loose – in all honesty, you can put Santa’s helper anywhere in your house.
Our Elf is called Cookie, and this year it'll be her sixth season to visit our house. In last week's Top Ten Thursday you got a little preview of what is expecting you. This is how Cookie's first week actually went down:
She woke up in her own little glittery bed, guarded by a friendly bear in PJs and a night cap, and she brought the traditional holiday PJs for Colin. Her note said she is going to ask a question or teach us some trivia every day.
‚Big Apple‘ π is the nickname for what city? This is Cookie‘s question of the day. She also let us know that the state of this city, as well as Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington and Michigan grow the most apples π in the πΊπΈ Oh, and she brought an apple scented shower mousse. Colin and his hockey buddies have been crazy about the Bilou bath products that are clearly marketed towards girls. Flavors include "Tasty Donut", "Cotton Candy", "Cherry Kisses", and the packaging is cute and usually pink, you get the picture. Who am I though to withhold this experience from him? (As long as he shares with me... it smells amazing!)
Cookie’s Assignment of the Day: Match the following transportation systems with the cities:
BART, Clockwork Orange, the L, MΓ©tro, Subway, the T, Tube
Boston, Chicago, Glasgow, London, NYC, Paris, San Francisco Bay Area
Except Glasgow we have used every one of them at some point during our travels!
Sports question by Cookie:
What do the following teams have in common?
#bostonbruins #chicagoblackhawks #torontomapleleafs #montrealcanadiens #detroitredwings #newyorkrangers
(Answer: The "Original Six" is a group of hockey teams that made up the NHL for the 25 seasons between 1942/43 and the 1967 expansion.)
Even though school is supposed to be happening every day, it still occurs that teachers take the day off in order to attend some training themselves. This was the case on Monday, so Cookie‘s note says ‚since you’ve got a day off school let’s do a π· photo scavenger hunt. Snap pictures of the following items:‘
- Coca-Cola Christmas Truck
- Beautifully wrapped gifts π
- Ornaments
- Stockings
- Christmas Tree π
- Gingerbread Man
- Santa π πΌ Candles
- Fireplace
- Cookies πͺ (obviously π€ͺ)
PS: Coincidence has it that I will need these pictures for the upcoming Top Ten Thursday ;-)
Cookie told us about the stunning development of the USD vs CHF exchange rate over the past 30 years. π°
1 USD was 2.5375 CHF in 1975 or 1.3125 CHF in 1995.
1 USD was 2.5375 CHF in 1975 or 1.3125 CHF in 1995.
She asked about today’s forex status: Colin grabbed the iPad, asked Siri, and it turned out it is exactly 1:1!
Why did π§ Sidney Crosby π buy a new dryer for his Mom?
Growing up Sidney used it for shooting practice. It was in bad shape. Bumps, dents, black puck marks... The display comment said that with his first NHL contract, Sid purchased a new dryer for his mom ;-)))
I just found out due to popular demand, the exhibition was made a permanent thing at the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame. check it out.
While I'm not surprised that C neeeds glasses, I am a bit shocked about the prescription. Looks like he follows my footsteps.
The first week is already in the books... I hope you're having fun following out adventures. Be sure to check back next week for an update!
