Welcome to May's Secret Subject Swap

Yes, I skipped April because I figured I was going to be busy doing the A-Z challenge.

Again 8 brave bloggers picked a secret subject for someone else and were assigned a secret subject to interpret in their own style. Today we are all simultaneously divulging our topics and submitting our posts.

Here are links to all the sites now featuring Secret Subject Swap posts.

Sit back, grab a cup and check them all out:

Chocolate, Strawberry or Vanilla?
Why that one?
Tell us a happy memory involving one of the three flavors.

It was submitted by: The Bergham Chronicles  - thank you, Jules!

So glad I got a lighthearted topic! All throughout the A-Z Blogging Challenge in April I was writing about crime, so I can really do with something completely different now!

A few years ago Colin and I went to the mall.

One store that we used to visit together was the Body Shop. Little C was always fascinated by body lotions that smell like lemon or mango, even though he wasn't allowed to taste them.

That particular time was before Valentine's Day, and they had a seasonal offer: the chocolate covered strawberry special if you will: two bottles of shower gel, one strawberry, the other one chocolate flavored, a bath lily and a pink washcloth folded into a heart.

And because I love my son, I love pretty things and I love bath products, I didn't mind purchasing the gift set.

Colin had a blast using them generously, and I'm telling you, the bathroom was smelling really nicely every time he took a shower.

Inevitably, all good things come to an end.

This was also true for the strawberry and chocolate shower gels. I don't think we ever ran out of shower gel as fast as back then!

Colin was bummed.

I wanted to cheer him up. Quick, I need an idea!

"Hey, C! How about some strawberry and chocolate shake? You have to promise not to drink it, though, OK?"

No sooner said than done: we were filling the almost empty shower gel bottles with water and shook them.

Wow! The bubbles! The smell! So much fun!

So here you go, a happy strawberry and chocolate flavored memory :-)

Something tells me this is not the story you had in mind when you submitted this prompt, though, right, Jules?

Alright, let's talk ice cream.

I don't have any happy early life memories involving vanilla. In fact I have sad memories involving vanilla ice cream. As a kid I hated disliked vanilla. I thought it was plain and boring. I seemed to be the only kid, though, because they sold vanilla ice cream everywhere. Many times when we went places it was either vanilla or no ice cream. And I was nothing if not consistent, even as a kid.

So if I''m trying to think of the earliest outstandingly happy ice cream memory I'd have to say it was when I first traveled to the U.S. in 1997. The friends I visited during their language stay in San Diego asked me to join them for their memorial day weekend trip to Las Vegas.

And it was there - at the New York, New York, to be precise - that I first tried chocolate chips mint ice cream! Soooo yummy!

Since this contains some sort of chocolate I hope that this qualifies as a happy ice cream flavor memory.

Not only is it special because of the impression Las Vegas left on me (and I didn't even win any money, which was due to the fact that I didn't gamble in the first place, which was due to the fact that most of my friends were underage at that time and therefore not allowed to even enter the casinos, haha) but because in Switzerland you can't buy chocolate chip mint ice cream.

You heard right. In Switzerland you pretty much can't buy chocolate mint anything. Except the British "After Eight" thins. I run into this First World problem every year around St. Patrick's Day.

When I was working for Mövenpick Ice Cream - the ice cream company in Switzerland - I suggested this flavor. I was dismissed with a quick "the Swiss market doesn't want chocolate chip mint."

Well, we do carry Strawberry as you can see in this nostalgic picture. I can't believe Colin was this little once:

Happy Friday - have some ice cream this weekend - after all it's Mother's Day! What is your favorite flavor?

Comments

  1. Mint chocolate chip is my favorite! And since he got it so often in utero, it's College Boy's favorite too!

  2. I am boycotting ice cream these days. That's the reason I fell down the stairs lol. It wasn't a big hardship though because I really don't like it that much. Every once in a great while. I'm more of a salty snacker. Loved the memories though.

  3. No choc mint anything?! Chocolate mint is one of my favourites - in ice-cream and in chocolate. And one of my all time favourites is Lindt chocolate mint ... isn't Lindt a Swiss brand? So do they make choc mint for Aussies but not for the Swiss? That's just plain wrong.

  4. Mint chocolate chip is my favorite as well, with a generous amount of hot fudge on the top just because! Wonderful post.

  7. Adorable picture of him. I love chocolate and strawberry and coffee and mint chocolate chip. No to vanilla way too boring unless it’s loaded with chunks of chocolate, peanut butter, and fudge.

  8. oh boy I'm lactose intolerant so no ice cream for me. But I do love all 3 flavors pretty equally. it would be so hard to choose just one

  9. Love your memories. I once got hot chocolate smelling bubble bath; it smelled so good! I got it right before Christmas, so it was pretty fitting to use at that time of year.
