UBC October 2024 - My 1500th Blog Post

Hello and happy Friday! Tonight is Colin's party. He invited nine friends because we own ten chairs, and I told him that's the natural limit ;-)

I'm excited for him, especially because I got him a football snack stadium, and I think it looks great!

Of course anyone older than 16 to 18 is not invited, even though I have something to celebrate as well, so I had to make plans for hubby and I to go out for dinner and a movie.

What's my celebration about?

This is my 1,500th blog post! These month-long writing challenges definitely help boost those numbers!

Usually I would bake something for the occasion, but I still have some of the applesauce/chocolate cupcakes from earlier this week.

Today I am going to answer your questions:

Martha asked what phone I used to take my pictures. In the summer, I once got caught in heavy rain with my old cell phone. The battery wouldn't charge and I had to leave it to dry for several days. Since then, the battery didn't even last for a normal day without me making videos or calls.  That's why I recently got the newest iPhone 16 Max Pro. I enjoy the improved zoom functions.

She also suggested to just hop on the boat and visit Evian after helping me reorganize my kitchen. This sounds like such a great plan! Well, I don't live at Lake Geneva. We would have to take a three-hour train ride first, but yeah, absolutely, let's do that!

Paul and Jeanine wanted to know whether the laundry I soaked in the lemon water smelled nicely? It didn't particularly. I feel like I smelled whatever made it gray? I read that laundry washed in hard (calcareous) water may feel and smell less fresh despite being cleaned, as detergent is less effective in hard water.

Isn't that a vicious circle? My laundry suffers from limescale. I soak them in a mixture of lemon juice and water, i.e. water containing limescale. Maybe I should spend some real money and wash my laundry with Evian?

Julie was amazed about the fact that I still remember that I treated a coworker badly 25 years ago. Two reasons:

Jeanine was - in her own words - gobsmacked by how backward women have been treated in Switzerland, and rightly so. Here's another topic:

Our marriage laws used to say the husband was the head of the family, and the wife had to take care of housekeeping. Without his consent, she was not allowed to have a job and / or a bank account. Once married, she was economically stuck. This law wasn't officially changed until 1988, even though the bank account issue must have gone away earlier; I've never had a problem. Then again I wasn't married prior to 1988 ;-

2024 we still have a long way to go when it comes to equality, think salary gap, family-friendly working hours, affordable childcare,...

I hope I was able to answer all of your questions, if not, you know where to find me.

Have a great day and read you tomorrow!

PS: Last night I posted so late that you seemed to haved missed a good laugh, check it out if you need a chuckle:

  3. How exciting for Colin to have a football snack stadium at his party! I'm sure he will have the best party, HAPPY BIRTHDAY COLIN!! But even more so exciting is the news about your 1,500th blog!! CONGRATULATIONS on that big event! Now you got me wondering, how many blogs have I written? Maybe a blog topic for me coming up. Thanks for answering my question AND giving me a plug! Your photos look so professional, wasn't sure if it was a camera of phone. I've never had an Apple phone, just Ipad but I do love my Google Pixel 6. It's an older model but works for me. LOL I enjoyed reading your replies to the other questions and I did see your late post last night, loved it! Happy Weekend!!

  5. Wow - congrats on your 1500tg post! 🎉
And thanks for these answers -
in college (Oregon, 1968) a prof in one of our education classes talked about some old rules - in the 1800s, girls were supposed to drape a scarf over pictures of their fathers / brothers, and over the mirror while dressing (!)
Girls couldn't wear slacks to class till 1967, and still needed to wear a dress to the dining hall on Sunday.
In the 80s, I needed to argue with the car dealer to get my name first on the car title... and yes, had challange with banking.
My parents were from rural families, and women were seen more as equals. My folks traded off who kept the books, and had a hint bank account.

  6. Well that's awful that something that should freshen laundry is defeated by hard water! And you've shocked me again about these rules and the way they affect women. I love that you are answering our questions, and I intend to move on to your linked post so I can have a laugh. Btw, you're wearing my fave color and it looks beautiful on you!!

  7. Congrats on your blogging milestone! 🥂 I admire your prowess in completing these multiple marathon challenges. Interesting about the hard water dilemma. My parents had a water softening appliance in their home. Might that be an option for you? Happy Belated Birthday to Colin! 🎉 I trust the party went well and the football snacks were devoured. P.S. You look great in orange. 👌
